Polskie Elektrownie Jądrowe carries out tasks aimed at ensuring Poland’s energy security. The company is responsible for, among other things:
- Preparing the investment process and acting as an investor in the project to build Poland’s first nuclear power plant. The company will also be responsible for the construction of subsequent reactors with a total installed capacity of about 6 GWe to about 9 GWe based on proven, large-scale, pressurized water nuclear reactors of Generation III(+) and their eventual operation.
- Supporting the government administration in its efforts to achieve the goals of the Polish Nuclear Power Program
- Building public support for nuclear power development.
The company Polskie Elektrownie Jądrowe is owned by the State Treasury. According to a 2021 Council of Ministers decree, the company is supervised by the Government Plenipotentiary for Strategic Energy Infrastructure.
The development of the nuclear power program is one of the pillars of strengthening Poland’s energy transition. The nuclear power development program is described in two key government documents on the country’s energy strategy:
- Polish Nuclear Power Program, the current version of which was adopted by the Council of Ministers on October 2, 2020. The document is a kind of “road map” for the construction of Poland’s first nuclear power plant.
- Poland’s Energy Policy until 2040, approved by the Council of Ministers in 2021, which lays out the main principles of the energy transition.
